Avoid the “It Doesn’t Fit” Nightmare — Here’s How to Measure Your Space Properly
Buying new furniture is exciting — until it arrives and doesn’t fit through the door, is too large for the room, or blocks walkways.
As a local Saskatoon furniture store, we’ve seen it happen, and we want to make sure you never experience that mistake.
Here’s a clear, step-by-step measuring guide you can follow before buying your next sofa, sectional, dining set, or bedroom furniture.
1️⃣ Measure Your Room Size
Start by measuring the length, width, and height of the room.
Also consider walkways, windows, vents, radiators, outlets, and existing furniture.
Tip: Leave about 3 feet (1 metre) of walking room in main pathways.
2️⃣ Measure Doorways, Hallways, and Entry Points
Most buyers make the mistake of measuring the room but not the path to get there.
Measure:
-
Front & back door height + width
-
Hallway width
-
Staircase width & turning radius
-
Basement entryways
-
Elevator, if applicable
Pro tip: You can remove a door from its hinges temporarily to gain extra clearance.
3️⃣ Tape the Furniture Footprint
Use painter’s tape to outline the exact size of the furniture on the floor.
This helps visualize:
✔ Space use
✔ Walkability
✔ Distance from TV, windows, and walls
✔ Whether it feels too big or too small
4️⃣ Consider Delivery Path + Turning Angles
A tight turn can make or break delivery success.
Check if the piece will need to tilt, stand upright, or rotate around corners.
5️⃣ Think About Real-Life Use
It might technically fit — but does it function well?
Check that:
-
Drawers can fully open
-
Recliners have enough extension space
-
Outlets and vents aren’t blocked
-
There’s room to walk around
6️⃣ Leave Comfortable Spacing
General guidelines:
-
18″–24″ between a coffee table & sofa
-
30″–36″ around dining chairs for movement
-
6″–10″ from furniture to walls for airflow
7️⃣ Bring Your Measurements When Shopping
